Optimization of Muscular Performance in Football Players

Physical training plays a crucial role in the development of football players, especially when it comes to improving their explosiveness and speed on the field.

One of the effective methods, sprinting with resistance, particularly using a weighted sled, has shown significant benefits.

Specific Training for More Power

According to the study Optimization of Muscular Performance in Football Players: Study on the Impact of Resistance Sprint Training and Its Relationship with the Distance Covered conducted by Hermosilla-Palma et al., using appropriate loads during sprints helps maximize gains in strength and speed.

The optimal load was defined as the one that reduces speed by 50% compared to a sprint without load. To determine this load, players performed 30-meter sprints with progressively increasing weights (0%, 25%, 50%, and 75% of their body mass).

The analysis was conducted using the MySprint® application (version 2.1.0), ensuring precise measurement of performance.

A Study Conducted with Football Players

The experiment was carried out with twenty-four football players (15.9 ± 0.69 years; 61.4 ± 7.08 kg; 1.69 ± 0.06 m) playing in the S15 and S16 categories of a professional Chilean club.

They followed an intensive training program that included six weekly sessions in addition to official matches.

To assess their progress, video recordings were made with an 8th generation iPad placed 10 meters from the sprint track on a 1.5-meter high tripod.

Six markers positioned every 5 meters allowed for the analysis of the players’ speed and adjustment of the load based on their individual capabilities.

Promising Results for Performance

Data from this study confirm that resistance sprint training leads to significant improvements in several key football actions:

    • Increased linear sprint speed
    • Better ability to change direction quickly (COD)
    • Improved acceleration and starts from a stop

A Generalizable Approach to Optimize Physical Preparation

Integrating these tools and training methods can be beneficial for any football players’ training program.

By adjusting the sprint load for each player, it is possible to maximize their physical capabilities while minimizing the risk of injury.

This scientific approach offers an interesting lever for optimizing athletic preparation and improving on-field performance.
